Bulldogs fall to Gulf Coast, 48-14

PERKINSTON --- Two early turnovers here Thursday night gave the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs early momentum as they knocked off the No. 15 ranked Holmes Community College Bulldogs, 48-14.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 2-1 on the season. Holmes hosts Northeast in the North Division opener on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. You can listen to the game on the Bulldog Radio Network or watch live at holmesccmedia.com.

Gulf Coast got the ball on their first possession of the game and drove 75 yards for the score. The touchdown pass came with 12:50 to go in the first quarter. The extra point was no good, and Gulf Coast led 6-0.

The Bulldogs got the ball on their next drive and drove quickly to the Gulf Coast 18 yard line thanks to a 32 yard pass from Jesse Wilson to Dylan Kelly. Two plays later, the Bulldogs fumbled the ball, and Gulf Coast picked up and raced to midfield. Gulf Coast then scored from four yards out on a run to go up 13-0 after the extra point was good with 7:36 left in the first quarter.

Gulf Coast then blocked a Holmes punt and recovered at the Holmes 16. Two plays later Gulf Coast scored on a touchdown run and made the extra point to go up 20-0 with 5:01 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs picked up their only score in the first half with 2:59 left in the second quarter when Reggie Hayes connected with Kelly on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Connor McKay's extra point was good, and Holmes trailed Gulf Coast, 20-7.

Gulf Coast answered the score with 11 seconds to play in the half on a touchdown run. The extra point made it 27-7 at halftime.

With 11:44 left in the third, Gulf Coast scored again on a touchdown pass. The extra point made it 34-7.

Holmes answered the score with 8:32 left in the third when Hayes connected with Kendarius Evans on a 35-yard touchdown pass. McKay's kick made the score 34-14.

Gulf Coast added two rushing touchdowns and two extra points in the fourth to round out the scoring.

Kelly had six carries for 46 yards and had two catches for 72 yards and one touchdown. Sophomores Luke Wilson and James Johnson each led the Bulldogs with 12 tackles in the contest.
