Bulldogs knock off No. 3 Northwest, 47-42
GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs racked up 568 total yards of total offense here Thursday night to knock off the No. 3 Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers to stay in first place in the North Division at 2-0.
With the win, the Bulldogs move to 2-3 overall. Holmes travels to Itawamba Community College Thursday night for a 6:30 p.m. contest. You can listen to the game on the Bulldog Radio Network. Itawamba will also stream the game at letsgoicctv.com.
Freshman quarterback Kyren Batey, freshman running back Danny Woodard and sophomore receiver Caleb Ducking each scored multiple touchdowns for the Bulldogs and paced the win over the Rangers.
Northwest scored late in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead with 1:41 left after the extra point was good.
The Bulldogs then answered the score early in the second when Batey found Ducking on a 32-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good, and Holmes trailed 7-6 with 14:17 left in the second quarter.
The Rangers then went up 14-6 after a touchdown with the extra point with 11:19 left in the second.
Holmes then answered right back as freshman running back Devontaye Bankston broke loose and raced 37 yards for the touchdown. The extra point was no good, and Holmes trailed 14-12 with 8:34 left in the second.
Northwest then went up 21-12 just before halftime with 2:17 left in the second.
Holmes then came out in the second half and scored three straight times to take and hold the lead for the remainder even though both team kept swapping scores in the second half.
Woodard got his first touchdown of the night with 8:48 left in the third as he took a pitch from Batey and raced 50 yards down the home sideline for the score. Easton Curry's extra point was good, and Holmes trailed 21-19.
Holmes got the ball back late in the third, and Woodard once again scored for the Bulldogs, this time from the 17 yard line. Curry's kick was good, and Holmes took a 26-21 lead with 1:45 left in the third.
The Bulldogs scored once again late in the third as Batey stepped in on a quarterback sneak from the one yard line. Curry's extra point made it 33-21 with 10:19 left in the game.
Less than one minute later, the Rangers answered the score to make it 33-28 after the extra point was good.
Holmes then turned the tables and answered quickly as Batey raced in from 56 yards out. Curry's extra point make it 40-28 with 8:11 left in the game.
The Rangers answered the score with 6:21. The extra point made it 40-35 Holmes with 6:21 left in the game.
Holmes then drove the ball to the 26 yard line before Batey connected with Ducking on his second touchdown of the night with 2:17 left in the game. Curry's extra point ended Holmes' scoring at 47.
Northwest then scored their final touchdown with 50 seconds to play to make it 47-42.
An onside kick was recovered by freshman defensive back Niageria Young, and Holmes ran the clock out from there.
The Bulldogs finished the night with 480 yards on 58 carries. Batey led with 162 yards on 16 carries and Woodard had 114 yards on seven carries. Holmes had 88 passing yards. Batey completed five passes with Ducking catching four for 83 yards.
Freshman linebacker Edwin Herard led the Bulldogs with eight tackles with one sack and one tackle for loss while Tyler McDaniel had seven tackles and one TFL and Rasson Carr had seven tackles and .5 TFL.
