Lady Bulldogs defeat Northwest, 3-1; head to state championship game

RIDGELAND --- The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs trailed the Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Rangers, 1-0, going into the halftime of the 2017 MACJC State Championship semifinal game today but outscored the Lady Rangers, 3-0, in the second half to pull out the 3-1 win.

The Lady Bulldogs, who are 13-0-1 on the year, are playing for their first state championship tomorrow at 4 p.m. versus the Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats, who beat Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the second semifinal of the day 2-1 in extra time on penalty kicks after two 10-minute overtime periods. Holmes fell to Jones in last year's championship game at Perkinston. The winner will advance to the NJCAA playoffs.

Northwest got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute on a goal from Carolyn Rials and an assist from Angelica Justice.

The Lady Bulldogs tied the match at one in the 56th minute on a goal from Taylor Gagneaux and assist from Britain Welzien.

Holmes took the lead for good in the 60th minute when Madison Deslatte scored on an assist from Pepper Ann Filbert.

Sarah Donahoo headed a shot in on an assist from Sarah Chastain in the 81st to seal the victory for the Lady Bulldogs.
