South claims All-Star win; Ellis named MVP

The South Division captured both matches yesterday in the 2019 MACJC All-Star Games on the Ridgeland Campus of Holmes Community College. The South women won, 5-3, while the South men won, 3-1.

In the women's match, Pearl River Community College's Yayira Zigi got the South on the scoreboard first on an assist from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Paris Payne in the first half.

Jones College's Lucy Critchell scored minutes later in the first half to put the South up 2-0.

Itawamba Community College's Ally Shinall brought the North closer in the first half when she scored to make it 2-1. Critchell scored again in the first half on an assist from Pearl River Community College's Victoria Stewart to make the score, 3-1, at halftime.

Pearl River Community College's Maddie Beets scored on a penalty kick in the second half to put the South up 4-1.

Holmes Community College's Zoe Ellis scored to make it 4-2.

The South Division rounded out their scoring when Meridian Community College's Skylar Spears scored on an assist from Beets.

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Cheyenne Smith finished the North Division scoring late in the match.

Most Valuable Player for the North Division women was Holmes' Zoe Ellis. Pearl River's Yayira Zigi was named South Division Most Valuable Player.

In the men's match, East Central Community College's Jacob Cockroft got the North Division on the scoreboard first on an assist from Holmes Community College's Brady Jacobs.

The North Division led 1-0 at halftime.

The South Division scored three times in the second half. The first goal came from Southwest Mississippi Community College's Marcelo Carias to tie the match at one.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Cisco Cerros gave the South the 2-1 lead. Pear River Community College's August Harp rounded out the scoring for the South on an assist from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Carias.

Most Valuable Player for the North Division was East Central Community College's Joel Hill while Jones College's Adrian Mondragon was named Most Valuable Player for the South Division.

MACJC Commissioner Steve Martin presented all MVP trophies.

Representing Holmes included: Brady Jacobs, Cameron Bell, Colby Fair, Brandon King, Kya Davis, Halleigh Steed, Alysia Terry and Zoe Ellis.
