Lady Bulldogs take No. 1 Phoenix to double OT but fall 2-1 in national title game

EVANS, Ga. --- The No. 2 seeded Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs took the No. 1 seeded Phoenix Bears to double overtime before Phoenix pulled it out in the final two minutes of the overtime period to claim the national championship.

The Lady Bulldogs ended the season 15-1-1. Along the way, they captured their fifth straight North Division title and their second straight MACCC title and second straight Region XXIII title along with the NJCAA South District Championship. Holmes is the first-ever NJCAA Division II Women's Soccer runners-up.

Neither team was able to score in the first half. Phoenix got on the scoreboard in the 64th minute. The Lady Bulldogs kept chipping away and were able to get a goal on the scoreboard in the 89th minute when freshman Olivia Deslatte blasted one in from 40 yards out off an assist from Laniee Chandler.

Neither team was able to score in the first overtime. Phoenix's winning goal came in the 108th minute.

The Lady Bulldogs had 20 shots in the game and nine on goal.

Holmes had three players on the NJCAA All-Tournament Team --- Mackenzie Thompson, Ravynne Wilson and Cariel Ellis. Ellis was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
