Holmes picks up 1-0 win over Pearl River in region semis; play for title on Sunday

ELLISVILLE --- The No. 3 Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs knocked off the No. 9 ranked Pearl River Community College Lady Wildcats in the semifinals of the Region XXIII Tournament at Jones College today, 1-0. Holmes was the No. 1 seed in the tournament while Pearl River was the fourth.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs, now 16-1-1, will face the winner of Jones and Northwest on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Jones for the Region and NJCAA Gulf South District title. The winner advances to Tucson, Ariz. while the other will wait for an at-large bid to the tournament.

Neither team was able to score in the match until the 77th minute when Jaycelyn Russ passed a ball to Callie McKinney who put it in the back of the net.

Jordan Bertschler got the start and had four saves in the first 45 minutes while Karly Murphy had four saves in the last 45 minutes.
