Holmes heads to National Championship after knocking off Jones, 2-1, in 2OTs

TUCSON, Ariz. --- The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs are headed to the 2022 NJCAA Division II National Championship after knocking off instate foe Jones College, 2-1, in double overtime here today in the first semifinal.

No. 1 Holmes, 18-1-3, will face No. 2 Phoenix, 14-2-1, on Saturday at 1 p.m. CST. Phoenix knocked off Northwest in the other semifinal today. Holmes and Phoenix played in Spring 2021 in the first-ever Division II National Championship with Phoenix coming out on top, 2-1, in 2OTs.

Holmes and Jones played only once during the 2022 season prior to today's match, and the Lady Bulldogs won the contest, 1-0, in overtime on the Ridgeland Campus.

Jones got on the board first in today's match in the 37th minute when Sydney Johnson scored an unassisted goal.

The Lady Bulldogs answered in the 43rd minute on a goal from Tailynn Remmel on an assist from Callie McKinney to tie the match at one.

Neither team was able to score the remainder of the first half, second half and the first overtime period.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the match in the second overtime when Jaelyn Hanson found McKinney who found the back of the net.

Jordan Bertschler got the start and had two saves and gave up one goal. Karly Murphy played the second half and the two overtimes and had six saves in 56 minutes.
