Lady Bulldogs end magical season as NJCAA National Champion runners-up

TUCSON, Ariz. --- In three years of NJCAA's Division II Women's Soccer, Holmes Community College and Phoenix College have met twice in the national championship match. Phoenix prevailed today to capture the 2022 title, 4-0.

Holmes finished their season with an 18-2-3 record while Phoenix finished the season at 18-2-1. Holmes made the championship after going 2-0 in pool play with a 6-1 win over Cape Fear and advanced on penalty kicks after tying Schoolcraft, 3-3. The Lady Bulldogs then defeated Jones, 2-1, on Friday in 2 OTs. Phoenix advanced to the championship game after defeating South Suburban, 7-1 and Southwestern Illinois, 5-1. They defeated Northwest, 2-0, in the other semifinal contest.

Phoenix scored two goals in the first half and two in the second half.

Phoenix scored a goal in the 18th minute to lead 1-0 and another in the 37th minute to lead 2-0 at halftime. They added another goal in the 63rd minute and 66th minute.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the match with five shots on goal and 14 shots in the contest. Phoenix had nine shots on goal and 18 shots. Goalkeepers Jordan Bertschler and Karly Murphy had five saves in the contest.

Following the match, Jaelyn Hanson and Tailynn Remmel were named to the 2022 Tournament Team prior to the Lady Bulldogs receiving their runner-up trophy.
