Holmes defeats Jones; picks up share of MACCC title

ELLISVILLE --- The No. 4 Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs picked up a 3-2 win here Tuesday over the No. 1 Jones College Bobcats securing their second straight MACCC Championship but shares the title with Jones and Northwest Mississippi Community College due to head-to-head competition.

Coming into the match, the Lady Bulldogs, 16-1 overall and 10-1 in the MACCC, knew they had to defeat Jones by two or have Northwest fall to Pearl River to claim the title outright. The Lady Bulldogs led the entire match and by two until the four minute mark when Jones brought it back to one goal. Jones will host next weekend's NJCAA Region 23 Tournament in Ellisville. Holmes will play Itawamba at 3 p.m. in a quarterfinal match on Saturday in Ridgeland.

Kristen Phillips got the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the 2nd minute when she scored on an assist from Brianna Lopez.

K.K. Morris then scored on a corner from Lopez in the 37th minute to put Holmes up 2-0. Jones scored in the 40th minute, and Holmes led 2-1 at halftime.

Phillips scored again in the second half in the 56th mark on an assist from Bailee Fairley to go up 3-1. Jones scored in the 85th minute to bring the score to 3-2.

Addi Roberts played 90 minutes in goal. She had six saves and gave up two goals to Jones.
