Bulldogs open basketball season on Friday at 2 p.m.
The 2024-25 Holmes Community College Bulldogs return four players from the 2023-24 team that went 23-9 and fell in the semi-finals of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. The Bulldogs open the season on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. vs. Arkansas State-Newport.
Returning players include: Cameron Wallace, forward, Little Rock, Ark.; K.J. Sykes, guard, Jackson; Alijah Jackson, guard, Belzoni; and Tra'Dareon Millbrooks, forward, Inverness.
Wallace, who was named NJCAA All-Region and MACCC First Team/Freshman of the Year, led the Bulldogs last season in scoring with 18.5 points per game with 593 points scored. He shot 57.9 percent from the floor (230-of-397) and 70.2 percent from the free throw line (127-of-181). He averaged 7.5 rebounds per game, 1.4 assists per game, 1.5 steals and one block per game.
Sykes averaged six points per game along with 1.1 steals, one rebound and 2.5 assists per game. Jackson averaged 1.7 points per game, 0.7 rebounds, 0.2 steals and 0.1 assists per game while Millbrooks averaged 1.2 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.2 blocks, 0.3 assists and 0.1 steals per game.
Newcomers include: Trey Smith, forward, Jackson; Christian Parks, forward, Meridian; Trey Alexander, guard, Clinton; Kylan Clark, guard, Cordova, Tenn.; Jakobi Thompson, guard, Jackson; Kameron Beverly, forward, Jackson; Amir Abdul-Rauf, guard, Atlanta, Ga.; Tyrel Shorts, forward, Jackson; Kameryn Bailey, center, Vicksburg; and Markuese Grady, forward, Pascagoula. Smith and Shorts are sophomores and transfers from Jones while Beverly is a sophomore transfer from Pearl River. Smith averaged 9.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for Jones while Shorts saw limited action. Parks played for the Bulldogs during the 2022-23 season.
Coach Jason Flanigan returns as head coach of the Bulldogs and is in his 20th year at Holmes and his 17th as head coach. Marcus Washington is in his second year as the Bulldogs assistant coach.
